YHA Main Beach, Gold Coast. Party On Dude.

When the YHA's own website says 'not recommended for families' it's a bit of a giveaway that the hostel is going to be full of young party people, and your chances of a decent night's sleep are going to be pretty slim. Having just spent three nights in the Brisbane Hilton, I'd had enough of being pampered anyhow, and since tonight's stay was coming out of my own pocket, I was happy to take a chance on it.

It wasn't looking good to begin with. It was Saturday night, and by six or seven in the evening, it was looking decidedly messy.  There were at least three full blown parties going on in dorm rooms all around me. The layout of the hostel is such that all rooms have large double glass windows, and a door leading out onto an elevated deck. There is zero sound proofing. Thankfully the noise died out before nine, presumably as these young pups headed out to the clubs of Surfers Paradise. Funnily enough, I must have been fast asleep by the time they came back in, as I didn't hear a peep, until several hair driers went off around eight in the morning (seriously.)

Other than that I loved the location, just over the road from the beach, and right by a marina. You can walk along the beach all the way to Surfers Paradise, probably an hour's stroll all in all, and a real treat. The YHA also put on a free shuttle bus if you are on a tight schedule. The Fishermans Wharf Tavern is right next door, which is one of the best pubs in the area, and there are a handful of other cafes and restaurants close by. The strangest thing about the hostel has to be that the bathrooms are accessed through the kitchen and lounge area. That's weird.
