Bic Runga, Athenaeum Theatre One, Melbourne.

4th May 2012
Athenaeum Theatre One, Melbourne.

With a name like Bic Runga, I had absolutely no idea what sort of music we were in for, whether it was a he, a she, or a them, or even if this was a music gig at all. Let's face it, Bic Runga could easily have been a pseudonym for a big hairy World Wrestling Federation heavyweight.

It turns out Bic is a very popular female singer, songwriter and musician from New Zealand. Except she isn't called Bic at all, you pronounce it Bec. This isn't a complete surprise as New Zealand is a country famed for its misuse of vowels. Kiwi's eat 'Fush and Chups', they tuck up in 'bid' at the end of the evening, and they would be scratching their 'hids' at the mere thought of us not knowing who Bic Runga was.

Well I am now well and truly aware of both who she is, and what a great performer she is. I absolutely loved the show and her music. She's all pop, but she manages to combine edgy songwriting skills with the dreamy vocal talents of a Dido, or even the Corrs.

If that hasn't put you off, here's a taster of her new album, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJ7VtIG3tCc&feature=relmfu.
