Gannets at Pope's Eye Fort, Port Phillip Bay

Pope's Eye was built in the 1880's, and was meant to be a fort to defend Melbourne from invasion from foreign ships. Today the only sentries are hundreds of Australasian Gannets that are nesting or roosting there. It's a magnificent sight to see the adults in full flight diving at breakneck speeds into the ocean. The babies are pretty cute too, as you can see from this photo! The only way to see them is by boat which you can catch from Sorrento, which we did back in 2008.
