The Melbourne Cup Carnival 2011 - what about the horse racing?

November 2011, Melbourne, Victoria

Big race meets just don't do it for me. I've never been to the Grand National, or Royal Ascot, or the Derby, and I had to turn down invitations to the Dubai World Cup on an annual basis. It's not the horses, it's the people they attract. The Races are like a daytime nightclub experience:  "Proctologist's dream. Wall to wall ar*eholes." (Cocktail 1988.)

Review of The Melbourne Marathon Festival 2011

October 2011, Melbourne Victoria.

I had to pull out of the 10km event today due to a sprained ankle, an injury a few people felt came rather too conveniently a week before the event. The reality is that they couldn't be more wrong, as an early morning run through the city is exactly what I call fun, as Alison knows all too well.  She has a slightly different point of view though and spent most of yesterday grumbling about the 7.30am start and that 'people must be bloody stupid to do this and actually pay for the privilege.'

Australian Basketball - The 2011 NBL Opening Game, guest starring the NBA's Patty Mills

The Melbourne Tigers took on the Sydney Kings in the opener for the new National Basketball League season down under, which was one of the most talked about games in this sports mad town, even hotter than Harry ‘Clueless’ Kewell’s debut for the Melbourne Victory the next day.

A Taste of Melbourne 2011

September 16, 2011

This four day show in Melbourne brings together the city's finest restaurants and the region's top food producers all under one giant roof, where Melbourne's Foodies salivate openly at the hundreds of stalls and free tasting stations. I had attended the Good Food & Wine Show earlier in the year (read about it here), and was impressed enough to take Alison along to the Taste of Melbourne, which is billed as the best food show in town. Which makes it slightly odd that we would want to attend really, because we make a point of not eating at the city's finest restaurants, I definitely wouldn't describe us as foodies, and vegetarian dishes were not high on anyone's a la carte agendas.

AFL: The 2011 Brownlow Medal Dinner - Superstars, WAGs and Toilet Breaks

The Chas Brownlow Medal is awarded to the AFL Footy Player of the year at an annual awards dinner in the week of the Grand Final. It's one of the hottest tickets in town, with paparazzi, red carpets, a live television broadcast, the cream of Australia's beautiful, rich young things, and an ageing crowd of corporate hangers-on. You've guessed it, I fell into the latter group, but I wasn't complaining too much even if our table was strategically located at the back of the room, firmly away from the cameras. The producers probably had us marked down as the 'good faces for radio' table long before we arrived.

24 Hours in Brisbane.

Sheep shearing, sunshine, Sheilas, XXXX, koalas, the river, sharks, Steve Irwin, and floods. Not the most flattering list of descriptors for a city you've ever seen, but that was sum total of expectations I had for Brisbane.

The Anonymous Suit's Guide: Sydney vs London

It just dawned on me that I have spent my entire life living in, or close, to second cities. It was a typically random thought I had whilst on yet another commuter trek to a city last week. This time it was Sydney, whilst most of my working life it's been London.

I consider second city residency one of my biggest achievements. Big city folk have often had a laugh at my expense over this particular small town boy, but as far as I'm concerned, I have spared myself commuter jammed trains, extortionate rents, and claustrophobia (though not a clinical diagnosis, my desire to break free from city life after 48 hours is good enough for me.)

What The Dell is going on?

What's going on with my favourite pc company? They keep launching wave after wave of consumer products that nobody wants. They may be as reliable as ever, they may have the latest technology, but is there any place for them in the consumer's home?

A Weekend in Wild West Melbourne

I was going to call this one man, one bike, one weekend but that would have built it up too much. Admittedly at a bit of a loose end with Alison away, my plan was to get to know my local town Werribee a little better. When I say plan, it was more of a spur of the moment thing faced with an all clear from the physio to start cycling, a burgeoning waistline, and bugger all else to do. Yep - I could have hung out with friends, but that would have meant hanging out in someone's house, an Aussie tradition I’m still not entirely enthralled with.

9 to 5 Living - Australian homes are rubbish by European standards. It's like living in an Igloo.

June, 2011. Melbourne, Victoria.

To tell you the truth, I reckon an Igloo might be warmer than our house. The house actually came with a 5 star energy rating. This is a house with single glass panes that wobble when you touch them, single brick external walls with no insulation, and interior walls so thin you can have a perfectly clear conversation from one end of the house to the other, five rooms away. '5 Star rating my arse,' as Jim Royle would say.

Werribee Open Range Zoo, Victoria

June 2011

We are a little fortunate to have a zoo right on our doorstep here on the West Side of Melbourne, the Werribee Open Zoo one of three that Zoos Victoria operates.  It didn’t take long for us to snap up their annual Friends of the Zoo Pass which gives us year round access to all three. Originally a breeding ground for the city centre and space starved Melbourne Zoo, Werribee Open Zoo is now firmly a standalone attraction in its own right, less than twenty five kilometres from its better known sister, and still a well kept secret that the masses haven’t latched onto.

9 to 5 Traveller: Frequent Flier points are no bonus.

Sometime yesterday morning Alison would have woken up in London having covered 3 continents, twelve thousand miles, 3 airports and 28 hours of flight time. I really feel sorry for her today, even if she gets to be at home with family and friends while I slog it out at the office. Let's be honest, long haul flying is a horrible experience. Old Frank Sinatra tried to make flying sound romantic, Michael Buble tried to close the deal too, but when two of the smoothest crooners in the land can't convince us, you know it's bad.

U2 360 Tour, Etihad Stadium, Melbourne.

December 2010, Etihad Stadium, Melbourne.

Or as I liked to call it, The Jay Z 360 Tour.

But I couldn't tell Alison that, it was her birthday present after all, and I wouldn't want her to think I had an ulterior motive or anything.

This tour had all the hype: two superstar acts, the Claw (the biggest stage ever assembled), highest grossing tour of all time, highest attended tour of all time, probably the longest tour of all time, and surely one of the loudest. The downside of such a big production was that carting all this stuff around the world guzzled enough fuel and emitted more carbon dioxide than flying to Mars and back. Isn't Bono trying to save the world or something? Maybe he was on a break.

Now That's What I Call A Music Festival - the Apollo Bay Music Festival.

April 2011 - Apollo Bay Music Festival.
There was a time in the late nineties when I was a regular of sorts on the Festival scene. I wasn't what you would call a hardcore festival devotee by any means, I generally took the more sanitised route of V Festivals and the like, but they were a lot of fun. I have memories of the non stop partying, of waking up next to strangers in tents, of the inevitable rain soaked fields, of bouncing joyfully through the masses, the no shower/no toilet regime, and of the frenetic pace of it all. And then there was the music. Wait. I almost remembered something else then. Nope, it's gone.

Braeside Cafe, Mount Macedon, Victoria

An hour's journey north of Melbourne and you can find a truly rare sight in Victoria... a mountain. Well, a large hill at least. The Victorian lands are so flat that at times you almost forget hills exist. To give you an idea of just how flat the West of Melbourne is, you can see the city scape from our house, which is 30km away. So when they do have a rocky outcrop of any magnitude to shout about, you can forgive them for getting a little excited and proclaiming it a mountain. Point in case Mount Macedon, which rises to just over one thousand metres and whilst no way near Alpine scale, is still mightily impressive as you approach it from the Calder Freeway.

Kobe Bryant... and other Sports Stars I hate.

The two-time reigning NBA champions the LA Lakers were emphatically dumped out of the NBA playoffs this week, hammered 4-0 by the Dallas Mavericks, and I loved every second of it. I don't have anything against the Lakers, indeed Magic Johnson has long been my all time favourite player and the 80's Lakers my favourite team, it's just that I can't stand Kobe Bryant, their self proclaimed superstar.

Great Places to Stay.

Now and again we have uncovered some absolute gems on our travels, which is completely and utterly down to Alison. She spends hours plotting and planning our trips, making sure we find interesting and unusual accommodation. It is tempting to keep them a secret, but that wouldn't be fair, so here is a list of some of the more memorable places we have stayed in. They all offer something unique, and get the 5 star thumbs up from Alison and me. However, since our tastes may not be too everyone elses, I have also included a more traditional star rating to set your expectations! All of the hotels, guest houses and hostels below are firmly located in areas of outstanding beauty or cultural interest.

ShadowFax Vineyard, Werribee

Saturday 4 June

How our life has changed. If we had an old friend round to our house back in the UK, the options in the immediate vicinity would have been limited to a pint of warm beer in the local pub at the end of the street, followed by a soggy pizza at the very average Italian at the top of the hill. In Werribee, we have a vineyard, a fabulous Open Zoo, a stately mansion and park, and an 18 hole golf course just ten minutes away. What's more you could visit all of them in a day and probably have change from $100 per person, if you had the energy. Throw in an evening stroll on South Werribee beach, and you can finish off the day in style.

The Good Food and Wine Show, Melbourne Convention Centre

Friday 3 June

I was fortunate to have the opportunity of combining work with pleasure late Friday afternoon, with a visit to the Good Food and Wine show. It's the first foodie show I have been to and I pleasantly surprised to see how enjoyable these types of thing can be.

Ex Pat Life: Emergency Clothes deliveries from Marks & Sparks

An emergency relief package was express airlifted into our house this week. No the floods hadn't reached Victoria, there weren't any bush fires, or cyclones, or any other natural disasters. It was a delivery from Marks & Spencer's. And yes it was urgent.

'Hello 999?' 'Yes help me. Can you give me the number for Marks & Sparks please?'

Vegetarians suck. But Eat less meat anyway.

Nothing will benefit human health and increase chances for survival of life on Earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet.  ~Albert Einstein

Cards on the table. I'm a vegetarian, and have been since 2003. And yes, my vegetarian wife Alison had a role to play in my conversion. Fact. But I had to believe in it myself and always had. You see I love animals, and found that eating them was the biggest single contradiction in my life. It was a pleasure laying it to rest and I haven't missed meat one single day of my life.

David Beckham - I miss the Golden Balled one.

David Beckham returned to wear the Manchester United shirt last week for the first time since he packed his Louis Vuitton bags in a rush exit back in 2003. The occasion was Gary Neville's testimonial. Testimonials used to be arranged for players who had notched ten years service, as a thank you to boost their pension funds ahead of a long retirement. Let's face it they are becoming a bit redundant, since the gate receipts probably equate to less than one month's salary, and well some players look like they are never going to retire anyway.

Does the 2011 EPL Premier League show us that it's a league in decline?

Like many I watched the UEFA Champions League at the weekend in complete awe at the level at which Barcelona played the beautiful game. Surely that was exactly how it should be played; skill, passing, movement, flair, speed, the team in blue and red were mesmerising. Even Sir Alex was humbled for the first time in his life and had to admit United 'were hammered.'

Commuting by Train in Melbourne - How chewing gum (almost) led to Murder on the Limited Express

May 2011, Melbourne.

Commuting is a horrible part of being a 9 to 5 lifer like me. Some days are better than others, and today was a bad day. I swear I could have killed a man on the train this morning. It wouldn't have been self defence, as he hadn't threatened me with violence. I couldn't have pulled an ASBO on him, because even though he was playing music ridiculously loud through his Dr Dre ear mufflers, I quite liked his tunes. The fact that he was a personal space invader amazingly didn't rile me too much either - besides I got my own back by kicking his ruck sack into some spilt coffee. I was nearly pushed over the edge by his skinny jeans and long pointy shoes, but I hung on in there with some deep breathing exercises.

Eco-Beach YHA, Apollo Bay

A YHA with the X Factor!”
5 of 5 stars
Date of review: May 21, 2011- New
April 2011: This was our third stay at the Eco-Hostel, and each time has been fantastic. The location is perfect, and not just because it's in one of the most picturesque bays in Victoria - the hostel itself is just two minutes from the restaurants and shops, and five minutes from the glorious beach.

A Survivor's Guide to Riyadh

In a poll of the top ten dullest cities in the world, it's a possibility that Riyadh could fill all ten positions. If your boss ever hints that it would be a good opportunity to develop the market there, I strongly suggest you start working on your excuses now. Or resign. If that's a bit drastic, and you're all out of excuses, I can offer you this survivor's guide as a last resort.

Kelso Sands Holiday Park, Tamar Valley, Tasmania

March 5, 2011: We had spent a week working our way up to the Tamar Valley, near Launceston, in a rather nifty camper van, having landed in Hobart. We had one very good reason to go out of our way to stay here, and that was the promise of seeing wombats around the site after dusk. In fact so concerned were we that we might miss them, Alison even phoned ahead around 5pm to see what time we could expect them.

Our Fijian Trip, April 2011

My very first attempt at a movie... I hope its not as dull as a slide show.

I'm spotting an opportunity.... South America looks clear for landing some time soon...

Myths & Legends Australia: Over 35's Master Basketball

Australian Myths & Legends IncIt sounds like a fierce shoot-em-up, action packed one hundred mile an hour playstation game, straight out of 'Nam. It couldn't be further from reality. I'm actually referring to a weekly snail paced shoot-if-you-have-the-strength scene of convalescence for former addicts.

Welcome to the world of over 35's basketball, my spiritual rest home.

    The Comics Lounge, Melbourne

We had a fun night at The Comics Lounge in North Melbourne last night. You know the drill if you've ever been to an old school comedy night: a bill of 3 or 4 comedians, a slick MC and host, and a room full of rowdy, tipsy and willing party goers. Throw in six hundred and eighty two uses of the F-Word and you pretty much have the full picture.

Is there such a thing as celebrating too much?

I thought the English cricket team won the award for over the top celebrations when they reclaimed the Ashes in 2005. And then last week or so Manchester United won their nineteenth premier title, and I received a tonne of mails from gloating United fans. I dread to think what will happen if they win the Champions League Final next week.

Anyway, it's by the by. They have all been outdone. The Finnish team have just won the Ice Hockey world championship for the first time ever. If fact it might be the first time Finland have won just about anything. So maybe we should forgive them. Or not.

    Things to Do in Dubai

A few people have asked me for tips on things to do in Dubai, so here's a quick low down on the capital of Gulf Glitz.

You can't dig too deeply for culture in the big Dubya, it's a pretty shallow ride, but if you know where to look, there's just enough to keep you interested for a week. If you like the finer things in life and non-stop sunshine, there's pampering to be had around every souk corner and beaches galore.

Diego Maradona Moves to Dubai: 5 Reasons he will love it!

It was announced yesterday that football legend Diego Maradona will take over as manager at the Dubai based Al Wasl football club next season. At first sight, it may come as a complete shock that such a renowned figure would turn up in that Mecca of world football we know as the United Arab Emirates. But I think it's a match made in heaven. Read on ....

The Best Road Signs of Melbourne, Australia - They are legendary.

    May 2011, Melbourne, Victoria.

Australians have plenty to say, and say it they must. Whether it be over a coffee, down the footy, or through their road signs, which is my personal favourite.  They never miss an opportunity to say it in words, even when there really isn't any need. Still, it can be good for a laugh. Here's a few I've come across in the past year or so:

The Fijian Resort, Yanuca Island, Fiji

We went against the grain a little with this trip. We hardly ever stay in luxury hotels, always meticulously plan our trips, like to be in the thick of the action, and we tend to keep moving on, backpacks in tow. Yet somehow we had booked a last minute trip for 7 nights in a 5* Shangri-La resort in the middle of nowhere, in a place we knew absolutely nothing about. That tends to happen when you forget to book somewhere to go two weeks before you have a week off. Still, that said, with the thought of seven days of tropical Fijian luxury ahead of us, we weren't complaining, and definitely not worried. Until I decided to read the hotel reviews the day before we were due to travel. Talk about opening a can of worms.

    Stop. Hammer Time.

    May 2011, Melbourne.

Picture the scene. A nightclub floor crammed with floppy haired kids, decked out in matching checked shirts and baggy jeans. The DJ is pumping out a Rap tune, everyone on the floor is dancing like crazy. They anticipate the cue. 'STOP'. Everybody freezes. 'HAMMER TIME.' As one, they  break into a united frenzy, running frantically on the spot, smiles beaming, hands waving, co-ordination most definitely lacking. Yep, there were an inevitable few fallers too. (But not, I hasten to add, me, Ash or Mikey; we had this one nailed.)

2011 Ashes Series: MCG, Boxing Day Test: The Day England Won the Ashes

The first day of the Boxing Day test match in Melbourne, and I had a funny feeling we were about to see something special. The series was tied at 1-1, and although England had been beaten heavily in Perth, I felt that the England bowling attack would come good again in Melbourne. At the same time, Mitchell Johnson had his day in the sun as far as I was concerned, and he would be revisiting planet mediocrity faster than his leg side wides.

Mark Butler in 'Grammar Don't Matter on a First Date'
    Elephant & Wheelbarrow, 21 April 2011

I had been a bit anal over a spelling mistake in an email at work that day. Normally I wouldn't have done anything other than 'tut' loudly to myself, but this was Victoria, and she's English. If we of all people don't protect the language, who will? Her crime was to spell the word heros without an 'e.' She laughed when I pointed out the error in the nicest way possible. Laughing at me I hasten to add.

Global Sports Hospitality: the best ways to enjoy your prawn sandwich.

I went to watch the Footy last week at the MCG - the Aussie Rules version. I was a guest of Cadbury's for the evening - in fact I spent the entire evening in a giant box of Cadbury's. Ok it was a corporate box, but what with all the free chocolate on offer, who could tell? As for the game itself - it turned into a cracking 95-95 draw, with St Kilda equalising with the last kick of the game.

I realised that I have been fortunate to experience some fantastic corporate hospitality over the years. It all started with a seat in the Royal Mail box at Anfield for my leaving bash back in 1994, and it went on from there. Some of it useful to my work, some of it not.... and whilst I don't consider myself to be from the 'prawn sandwich brigade' ((c) Roy Keane) - its more down to a  technicality. I don't eat fish. Other than that I am openly delighted to to be invited to indulge in some chatting, smoozing and watching some top quality entertainment - all in the name of work.

A Job Ain't Nothing But Work...

Its been a long time since I added to the blog... I just realised that it co-incided with me getting a job. Bugger. That was six months ago. Six long months ago. So for the 3 people who actually read some of the crap I put on here. I'm backBaby.

Well almost. I've just got to go to work first.
